Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce launches platform for 2018 municipal election

Platform aims to set agenda for candidates in upcoming election

GREATER SUDBURY, August 17, 2018 – The Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce is calling on candidates for Mayor and Council to adopt its 2018 municipal election platform, Supporting Growth Through Economic Development. The platform identifies five areas of opportunity and 18 actions, and will help ensure Greater Sudbury’s economic prosperity.

Supporting Growth Through Economic Development provides a blueprint to the Mayor and Council that they can adopt in their coming term,” said David Boyce, spokesperson for the chamber and past-chair of the Board of Directors. “We are calling on candidates to adopt the platform and commit to the actions it identifies so that Greater Sudbury will continue to be an attractive place to live, work and play.”

By releasing the platform early in the campaign period, the chamber hopes to shape the discussion in the upcoming election and help voters make informed decisions. The chamber is encouraging all voters to consider the platform when they head to the polls in October,

The five areas of opportunity identified in Supporting Growth Through Economic Development are:

  • The Kingsway Entertainment District and The Junction;
  • Planning our infrastructure investments;
  • Supporting business at Tom Davies Square;
  • Building a skilled workforce; and
  • Pro-actively managing our water systems.

Each area is broken down into specific actions that the Mayor and Council can execute during their coming term. The chamber is urging candidates to commit to these actions in order to support Greater Sudbury’s fiscal well-being, efficiency in municipal services and operations, quality of life, and economic prosperity.
