GREATER SUDBURY, March 15, 2019 – Join the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce on Friday, March 22nd, 2019 from 12:00-2:00 pm as they host Jamie West, MPP for Sudbury, and France Gélinas, MPP for Nickel Belt, for a luncheon address to discuss issues of importance to Greater Sudbury’s business community. 

This luncheon will be Mr. West’s and Ms. Gélinas’ first joint address to the chamber community since the provincial election of June 2018. They will discuss many relevant topics, including:

  • the role of government in supporting business;
  • the fundamental importance of predictability;
  • how to build and improve our modern workforce, which is essential to a modern economy;
  • how to expand our capacity for research, innovation and excellence, in order for businesses to be competitive in the global economy;
  • the importance of transportation, including maintenance and expansion; and
  • how a progressive government can build an economy where everyone benefits.

About Jamie West:

Born and raised in Sudbury, Jamie has devoted himself to working on issues that affect families in the community like healthcare, poverty, public safety, and opposing the privatization of public assets like the selling of Hydro One.

Jamie is a graduate of both Cambrian College and Laurentian University. He’s also a well-known advocate for workers’ rights and fairness.

Jamie believes in giving back through volunteerism. He has been a United Way volunteer since 2002, and has sat on several different boards and advisory committees in the Greater Sudbury area.

Prior to the 2018 election, Jamie was the Worker Safety Rep at the Copper Cliff Smelter. He was also the President of the Sudbury & District Labour Council for 5 years, and a Labour Studies Sessional Professor with the School of Northern Development at Laurentian University.

As the Labour Critic for the official opposition, Jamie is a strong voice for the people of Sudbury and the workers of Ontario.

About France Gélinas:

France Gélinas is the Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for the riding of Nickel Belt, Chief Opposition Whip and the NDP Health Care Critic. She is a health care professional and community leader.

Since being elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 2007, France has been a strong advocate on health care issues. She was instrumental in bringing forward Private Members Bills; including the Skin Cancer Prevention Act (to regulate the tanning beds industry); the Smoke-Free Ontario Amendment Act (to ban flavoured tobacco); and the Healthy Decisions for Healthy Eating Act (to require restaurants of a certain size to disclose calories on foods and drinks served), which the government then adopted in its own legislation.

France has served in multiple voluntary roles. She has been the President of the Sudbury and Manitoulin District Health Council, President of the Francophone Reference Group of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, President of the Association of Ontario Health Centres now the Alliance for Healthier Communities, as well as a member of the United Way’s Citizen Advisory Panel.

France, a Franco-Ontarian, lives in Greater Sudbury with her spouse Keith Harris. They have three children and six grandchildren. France is also a bush pilot, a competitive rower and an avid snow boarder.
