Chamber successfully passes policy resolutions at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce

Chamber works with CEMI and Northern Ontario colleagues to advance policy

Last week, your chamber participated in the Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s (CCC) Annual General Meeting in Ottawa.  With a network of over 450 chambers of commerce and boards of trade, representing 200,000 businesses of all sizes in all sectors of the economy and in all regions, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce is the largest and most influential business association in Canada.

The CCC AGM is the venue where chamber of commerce and board of trade delegates from across Canada advance and debate policy resolutions of a national scope.  This year the chamber advanced two policies:

  • Supporting Canada to become a Leader in Global Mining Innovation: this resolution calls on the federal government to bolster efforts to support innovation in mining and research that incorporates the mining industry, supply and service companies and cross-sector industries to better support implementation and commercialization efforts.  The chamber collaborated with the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) on this important resolution. Watch Douglas Morrison, President and CEO, CEMI, defend this resolution in Ottawa at the CCC AGM: https://youtu.be/dVdD9LBS_fE. In this video, Douglas talks about the importance of investing in innovation that leads to commercialization and the difference between research and innovation.

  • Citizenship and Immigration Canada Regional Settlement: this resolution calls on the government to conduct a cost-benefit analysis of re-offering immigration services in local communities such as Greater Sudbury that faced closures of their Citizenship and Immigration offices in 2012 following federal budget cuts. Read the resolution here.

Both resolutions received overwhelming support and have now become the official policy of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

“These resolutions have influence,” says Karen Houtovenko, Chair of the Board, Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce.   “The Canadian Chamber of Commerce will be presenting these resolutions to the new government and will be using these policies to advocate at the national level.  This is a true example of Sudbury’s business voice being represented at the national stage.”

Delegates at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s AGM also adopted a range of other resolutions calling for a reduction in Greenhouse Gas emissions by 2050, for the ratification of the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement and addressing pension reform, among others, positions that will serve as the basis for an ambitious advocacy agenda to be addressed to the new government.
