Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce Policy Resolutions are passed at Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM

Greater Sudbury, October 2, 2017: The Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce (GSCC) introduced three policy resolutions at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s (CCC) Annual General Meeting and Convention, held September 23 – 25, in Fredericton, NB. The GSCC introduced a resolution addressing union certification entitled “Restoring Secret Ballot Voting for Union Certification,” a resolution calling on government to reduce the regulatory burden on small business entitled “Addressing the Challenges of Ontario’s Largest Economic Sector: Small Business,” and a resolution calling for better labour market information called “Invest in Labour Market Information to Close the Skills Gap.”

All three resolutions received the support of delegates from chambers across Canada and have now become the official policy of the CCC.

“Our members continue to identify attracting and retaining skilled labour as one of their top barriers to growth,” said Michael Macnamara, Chair of the Board, Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce. “Our resolution calls for specific improvements to labour market information so we can close the skills gap and grow Canada’s economy.”

The GSCC also collaborated with fellow Ontario chambers to support a number of policy resolutions which addressed issues such as improving the cyber-security of small businesses, improving environmental assessments, and supporting investment in innovation.

The AGM also featured a presentation from Minister of Finance Bill Morneau. During his presentation, delegates from across Canada had the opportunity to ask him questions and express their concern over the proposed federal tax changes. Chamber delegates voted resoundingly to adopt a resolution calling for the government to postpone implementing the proposed changes and strike a royal commission to review the tax code.

All resolutions receiving the support of the delegates at the convention become the official policy of the Canadian Chamber and will be pursued with the federal government in the coming months and years.
