Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce Policy Resolutions are passed at Ontario Chamber of Commerce AGM and the chamber wins the Chair’s Award

GREATER SUDBURY, April 30, 2018 – the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce (GSCC) introduced two policy resolutions at the Ontario Chamber of Commerce’s (OCC) Annual General Meeting and Convention (AGM), held April 26-29 in Hamilton, Ontario. The GSCC introduced a resolution calling on the provincial government to collect better labour market information entitled, “Strengthening Labour Market Information for Business Competitiveness,” and a second resolution addressing union certification entitled, “Increasing Democracy in Ontario’s Workplaces.”

Both of the resolutions received the support of the delegates from chambers across Ontario in attendance at the AGM and have now become official policy of the OCC.

“Detailed labour market information is an essential resource not just for businesses, but all stakeholders, from government policy planners to students looking to choose a career,” said Michael Macnamara, Chair of the Board, Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce. “Our resolution calls on the government to commit to this critical investment which will ensure that stakeholders can address the skills mismatch and help our economy to grow.”

“Increasing Democracy in Ontario’s Workplaces” calls for the provincial government to restore secret-ballot voting for the union certification process. Secret-ballot voting is a fair, democratic process that ensures that all workers are able to express their wishes free from undue influence.

All resolutions receiving the support of the delegates at the convention become the official policy of the OCC and will be pursued by the chamber network with the provincial government in the coming months and years.

Additionally, the GSCC was recognized with the Chair’s Award for its leadership in organizing and hosting its inaugural Procurement, Employment and Partnership (PEP) Conference and Tradeshow.  The Chair’s Award recognizes a chamber that has demonstrated success in operations, member services, and community leadership.

The GSCC hosted PEP from February 5-7, 2018.  The conference brought together industry leaders in the mining and procurement sectors to explore ways to grow Northern Ontario’s resource development and infrastructure sectors though innovative supply chain management.

The GSCC will be hosting its second annual PEP conference January 21-23, 2019 in Greater Sudbury.
