September 2009 The federal government held a public review of the proposed copyright act and solicited input from stakeholders. GSCC submitted a recommendation to review committee that stated that Canada is years behind its trading partners in reforming copyright laws for the digital age and that the time has come for Canada to catch up with the rest of the world. The GSCC also submitted a letter to the Minister of Industry that echoed the previous sentiments and added, “the Copyright Act must support creativity and innovation. This is critical to growing and maintaining the knowledge‐based economy. Second, exclusive rights awarded under the Copyright Act must provide rights holders with the recognition and remuneration essential to sustaining creativity and innovation.”
